ABB has hired a new editor. Over the next four years, ABB will be taking a look at its database of questions and will be editing all its questions, writing new questions for its books, and making the questions more difficult for students to identify the author and title. We are doing this to in order to get ready for a national competition.
In our selection of titles, the Spanish/English Book List is designed for local school sites to assist in their English literacy programs. We have had many requests from our members for such a list and we are happy to assist in their educational goals and literacy programs.
ABB has a new link on our website, Resources for Teachers and ABB Members. Please take a look at the link on the Home Page to find resources ‘from teachers to teachers’, educational materials to assist in your literacy programs, educational competition programs for all ages, and so much more.
We have changed our computer program selection of questions so all rounds will have a balance of questions from each book. We decided to make each book equal in the amount of questions that are used in every level of questions/booklists.
ABB takes the month of July off so our volunteer member staff can take a summer break. You can still reach us through emails or phone calls but please have patience for us to get back to you.
August of each year our new Membership Order Form is posted on the website. ABB does not take orders for next school year’s booklists till the new form is posted. Please wait till this form is posted before placing an order for ‘next school year’ even though our booklists are listed on the website. All next year’s booklists are posted on the website in April of each year in order for schools to begin ordering books and allowing students to begin reading if they so wish.
As of January 1, 2014, we will no longer be reimbursing membership fees for questions/rounds that were ordered incorrectly by our members. Please make sure you are ordering the 'membership(s)' for the booklist(s) and grade level(s) you need. If you have questions or are not sure, as to which membership(s) to order, please contact us first before sending in your membership form with your check.
The Starter Kit (forms, CD & DVD):
There is a packet of forms, judging sheets, letters, and a host of other items you might need to conduct a battle at your school site. These are examples of one school district’s competition and the forms were designed for a district wide competition. Your forms may be different in many respects but these examples will give you a starting point for generating the forms you will be using/needing.
The graphics & logos CD is designed to be read by your computer. All graphics are ready to go to a graphic printer to make banners, poster, t-shirts, letterheads, etc. You can add or take away from the designs and combine the logos with your school colors and symbols.
The DVD will not work in a computer; it is designed to play in a DVD player only. We no longer offer Deluxe Memberships but visuals in the DVD show how battle of the books works in many parts of the country as well as the four styles of competition ABB has developed.
ABB reading program does meet Common Core Standards/Guidelines, as well as, all 50 States reading/literature standards by analyzing and describing in depth characters, settings, and plots; developing reading perseverance; finding main ideas and details in literature; and the development of vocabulary and sentence structure. The concept of battle of the books does not tell a student ‘how to think or reason’ but rather gives knowledge to a student, so he or she may think independently and academically grow in skills of higher level thinking.
ABB is supporting Tennessee’s Battle of the Books statewide competition. You can learn more by checking out State Competitions.
ABB is now offering Specialty Lists of Titles. Schools can order questions for a specific set of titles that they would use in their competition. Find out more about ordering questions for a list of books that ‘you created’ please call Steve at 661-248-1009.
